100 Years of Television: From Baird’s First Test to a Global Stage

On October 2, 1925, Scottish engineer John Logie Baird performed the first successful test of a working television system.
What started as blurry, flickering silhouettes in a London lab has grown into one of the most influential inventions of the modern era — television.

Today, we celebrate 100 years of TV — a century of shaping culture, sparking imagination, broadcasting news, and connecting billions of people across the globe.

The Beginning: Baird’s Vision

Baird’s breakthrough in 1925 used a mechanical system of spinning discs and light-sensitive cells. It was crude, fragile, and experimental — yet it laid the foundation for a revolution in communication and entertainment.

By the 1930s, television broadcasts had begun. By the 1950s, the “Golden Age of Television” brought families together around living room sets. And by the 21st century, television evolved into streaming, mobile devices, and on-demand global access.

How Television Changed the World

  • News & Democracy: TV brought world events into homes, from the moon landing to the fall of the Berlin Wall, shaping collective memory.

  • Entertainment & Storytelling: Sitcoms, dramas, sports, and documentaries — TV became a shared cultural experience.

  • Advertising & Business: Television created global brands, shifting how companies reached customers.

  • Education & Awareness: From Sesame Street to Discovery Channel, TV became a powerful learning platform.

  • Technology’s Ripple Effect: Innovations in color, HD, cable, satellite, and now streaming continue to redefine what “television” means.

Looking Ahead: The Next Century of Television

While the way we “watch TV” has changed — from antennas to smart devices — its purpose remains: to connect, inform, and inspire. As streaming merges with AI and virtual reality, the next century may redefine how we experience shared stories altogether.
